What Different Mold Types Can Tell Us
Stachybotrys does not become airborne easily. Detectable airborne Stachybotrys often indicates disturbed mold or airflow from a contaminated cavity.
Chaetomium usually indicates prolonged water damage. It commonly develops after building materials have remained wet for weeks.
Penicillium and Aspergillus are early colonizers. They are among the first molds to grow after water damage and are common following leaks, flooding, or elevated humidity.
Cladosporium is usually an outdoor mold. High indoor levels alone do not necessarily indicate contamination and should always be compared to outdoor conditions.
Alternaria is commonly associated with intermittent water intrusion. It is frequently found after roof leaks, window leaks, plumbing leaks, and condensation problems.
A quick but really important note: Many people are surprised to learn that knowing the exact type of mold usually doesn’t change how it is removed. Mold identification can provide clues about moisture conditions, but remediation is based on the condition of the building and the extent of contamination.
