When water damage occurs, the goal isn’t just to remove visible water—it’s to return affected materials to their normal, dry condition as quickly and safely as possible. Porous Materials (High Absorption)

Materials like drywall, carpet, insulation, and wood contain tiny air spaces that absorb and trap water.

Semi-Porous Materials (Moderate Absorption)

This graph illustrates the drying of a heavily saturated 2×8 framing member. Although moisture was continuously leaving the wood, the moisture meter remained at its maximum reading for the first 9 days because the lumber was still above the meter’s measurable range. An additional 5 days of drying were required before the framing reached an acceptable dry standard. This will only happen with exceptionally wet lumber.


Non-Porous Materials (Minimal Absorption)

Materials like tile, metal, and plastic do not absorb water.

  • Water remains on the surface
  • Drying is fast once water is removed
  • These materials are typically unaffected structurally

Categories of Water Loss

Not all water damage is the same. The category of water affects both safety and the drying approach.

Category 1 – Clean Water

  • Source: broken supply lines, sink overflows, appliance leaks
  • Minimal contamination
  • Materials can often be dried and restored if addressed quickly

Category 2 – Gray Water

  • Source: washing machines, dishwashers, sump pump failures
  • Contains contaminants that can cause discomfort or illness

How Quickly Materials Dry

  • Insulation: Typically if insulation is captured between wall materials like drywall and the exterior sheathing, it will need to be removed as it will never dry properly and create a risk for mold.
  • Wood framing: 3–7+ days. A completely saturated framing member can take up to 10 days to fully dry.
  • Concrete: Several days to weeks depending on thickness

The longer materials stay wet, the more water they absorb—and the harder they are to dry.


Capillary Action: How Water Moves Upward

Water Migration in Drywall Over Time

The photographs above demonstrate capillary action, the process by which water is drawn upward through porous building materials such as drywall. Although the bottom edge of the drywall was the only portion in direct contact with water, moisture continued to migrate upward over time.

The left column shows standard photographs of the drywall, while the right column shows corresponding infrared (thermal) images. In the infrared images, the cooler (darker) areas represent portions of the drywall that remain wet and thus, cool, due to evaporative cooling.

Top Row – March 11: Shortly after exposure, water has begun wicking upward from the bottom edge of the drywall.

Middle Row – March 15: Four days later, moisture has continued to migrate higher within the drywall to approximately 8-9 inches, even though the water level in the bucket has remained unchanged.

Bottom Row – March 25: After two weeks, the moisture has reached approximately 12-13 inches above the water line. This illustrates that water damage is often far more extensive than what is visible at the point of contact.
